Interview with Henk Van Leeuwen

What were some of the memorable experiences you had at Deakin?

Excellent interaction with lecturers and intellectually stimulating discussions with both mature students and teaching staff. The research for my masters in particular involved some exciting field exercises. Namely, locating, visiting and interviewing senior migrants from the Netherlands, who had been in Australia 40 years or more. We discussed their knowledge and images of Australia prior to arriving here, their first impressions on arrival, and their later critique.

Did you learn anything from your Deakin studies to take directly to the workforce?

Yes, a methodological research approach to later self-employment and organisation in arts management and promotion.

What are your career/life highlights?

Working for a highly regarded Victorian MP for a decade, who was also a Minister. Bringing to Australia and touring some of the finest European jazz and classical musicians for over 20 years.

What's your advice to our current students?

Research widely. Check out experienced practitioners in your field of study. Don't take short cuts. And work on the written construction of your rationale for your defined subjects/studies.
