Admission requirements for studying Law at Deakin

Entry into any of Deakin University’s undergraduate Law degree programs is based on academic merit as indicated by an applicant’s previous academic record.

School leavers

Entry for school leavers will be based on their performance in Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) or its equivalent, with a pre-requisite study score of at least 35 in English EAL (English as an additional language) or 25 in English other than EAL. Applicants will be selected in accordance with the published clearly-in The Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) for that year.

Non-school leavers

Entry for non-school leavers will be based on:

The Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of a minimum of 4 credit points (equivalent of one trimester/semester of full-time study) successfully completed at an accredited higher education institution. These studies need to be undertaken at a minimum Bachelor degree level (AQF Level 7 or above) and completed within the past 10 years. The current minimum WAM required for entry per campus is as follows:

  • 70% Burwood campus
  • 65% Geelong Waterfront campus
  • 60% Cloud campus

In lieu of a WAM as described above, entry for non-school leavers will be based on the percentile ranking results of the Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT) – Multiple Choice. The current minimum STAT (multiple choice) percentile rank required for entry per campus is as follows:

  • 70% Burwood campus
  • 65% Geelong Waterfront campus
  • 60% Cloud campus

Applicants who do have a previous WAM can also sit the STAT if they wish, however they cannot have their WAM omitted for 100% STAT result. The STAT result will be given a 50% weighting in circumstances where applicants have an applicable WAM.

Applicants with TAFE or equivalent level qualifications (diploma or associate degree studies) are required to sit the STAT.

*From 1 June 2017 Deakin University has changed their admission test for Law from the Australian Law Schools Entrance Test (ALSET) to the Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT) Multiple Choice. Deakin will accept ALSET test results in lieu of STAT until the end of 2019.
