Writing mentor program

An excellent student leadership opportunity exists for currently enrolled Deakin undergraduate students to be involved in an innovative peer learning program on campus and online. This program is designed to support new and continuing students from all faculties.

What is a writing mentor?

A writing mentor is a guide who helps students understand the expectations of university assignments by providing tips and strategies for developing academic writing skills. Writing mentors help students with time management, unpacking assignments questions, researching, writing, and referencing skills.

Mentoring is about assisting students to become independent and self-directed learners through empowerment by utilising our own experience as students.

Purpose

Engage and connect with students from all faculties and disciplines.
Listen carefully and question as needed to understand students' reasons for seeking support.
Help students understand how to interpret academic expectations.
Assist students to access and make use of Deakin's Study Support resources.
Encourage student awareness of key study concepts, such as time-management and. independent learning.
Share knowledge of other relevant support services.
Increase levels of confidence in new and continuing students by encouraging independent. learning skills from a student perspective.

Typical tasks

Writing mentors will undertake the following tasks:

Provide peer writing support to students across all faculties and disciplines, in both face-to-face and online environments.
Help students find their best approaches to study.
Guide students in using Deakin’s Study Support resources.
Collect statistics about student enquiries.
Participate in ongoing professional development.
Participate in team or individual projects, including promoting the service.
Liaise with senior student writing mentors and language and learning advisers.

Selection criteria

Current Deakin student continuing undergraduate studies.
Good academic results with WAM (average results) greater than 65%.
Completed at least 8 units of study at Deakin.
Excellent listening skills and proven teamwork skills.
Good communication skills.
Enthusiasm in wanting to engage and help other students.

Note: Selection of student writing mentors may also consider the need to ensure a mix of students from across faculties.
