COVID-19 and adjustments for exams

No exams will be held at Deakin exam venues, or external exam venues, for Trimester 2 2020. Further information can be found at Assessment and Results general exam information page and at the Deakin Life blog.

Your timetable is available in StudentConnect.

Online exam format

Information will be published in your CloudDeakin unit site. Most exams will be delivered through your CloudDeakin unit site as one of following formats:

  • A supervised online exam
  • A timed exam
  • A timed exam available to start during a 24-hour window
  • An exam which you will download to work on, then return to the site to upload it. Usually within 24 hours or 48 hours period.

Students with a current Access Plan

Exam adjustments on your Access Plan will be adapted and applied to your exam where relevant.

A supervised online exam:

  • General information on supervised online exams can be found at the SharePoint site.
  • If your Access Plan has adjustments of rest breaks and/or time for extra writing, then this is combined and rounded up. This extra time will be added to your total exam time. You do not need to request this as it will be implemented by the CloudDeakin support team.
  • Rest breaks can be taken away from camera view if required.
  • If your Access Plan has an adjustments to exam start time this should be reflected in your StudentConnect timetable.
  • If you use Assistive Technology (such as screen readers) please test these during the ‘Try-It-Out’ exam to assure it works effectively. Contact your Disability Liaison Officer if you encounter issues in the practice exam.

A timed exam:

  • If your Access Plan has adjustments of rest breaks and/or time for extra writing, then this is combined and rounded up. This extra time will be added to your total exam time.  You do not need to request this as your faculty CloudDeakin support team will implement this adjustment.
  • Rest breaks can be taken away from your computer if required.
  • If your Access Plan has an adjustment to exam start time this should be reflected in your StudentConnect timetable.
  • If you use Assistive Technology (such as screen readers) and are provided a practice exam opportunity, please test your Assistive Technology to assure it works effectively. Contact your Disability Liaison Officer if you encounter issues in the practice exam.

A timed exam available to start during a 24-hour window.

  • If your Access Plan has adjustments of rest breaks and/or time for extra writing, then this is combined and rounded up. Extra time will be added to your total time.  You do not need to request this as your faculty CloudDeakin support team will implement this adjustment.
  • Rest breaks can be taken away from your computer if required.
  • You have the flexibility to choose when you start your exam. Therefore, an adjustment in start time may not be required.
  • If you use Assistive Technology (such as screen readers) and are provided a practice exam opportunity, please test your Assistive Technology to assure it works effectively. Contact your Disability Liaison Officer if you encounter issues in the practice exam.

An exam which you will download to work on, then return to the site to upload it.

  • These exams provide an inclusive approach to assessment. Therefore, time for rest breaks are built in. Even though you have 24 or 48 hours to complete an exam you are not expected work on it for the entire time. Your unit chair will communicate their expectations (such as a word count) in more details via the Unit Site.
  • Make sure you submit your completed and upload before the deadline as outlined on your Unit Site.

Adjustments to exam start time

Some students have timetable adjustments outlined in their Access Plan. Timed exams available for a 24-hour window and/or downloadable exams (24 or 48 hours exams) may offer you flexibility to space your exams and rest between them.  Where the flexibility to choose your exam start time does not allow for the adjustments outlined in your Access Plan then your timetable may have changed accordingly.  Therefore, your timetable may be slightly different to other students enrolled in your unit. Check your exam timetable in StudentConnect carefully with the above information in mind.

Other information

  • Deakin has taken an inclusive approach of adding an extra 1 hour (or 50%) to all timed exams for all students. This allows for reading time and potential interruptions (e.g. Internet connectivity or household disruptions). Access Plan adjustments of rest breaks and/or extra writing time is in addition to this and will be added to your total exam time.
  • You will not receive an updated Access Plan, but you will receive information about your adjustments via your Deakin student email address.
  • Amendments to current Access Plans or new requests for exam adjustments may not be possible within 2 weeks of the start of the exam period.
  • If you have technical difficulties during your exam of your exams, there will be IT support staff available. Contact them an online request form or by phone on 1800 463 888 (+61 3 5227 8888 if calling from overseas). IT support will be available 8am-10pm Monday-Friday and 9am-5pm over the weekend (ADST).
