Induction and coursework

The PhD Xtra program is designed to provide a framework that better enables Higher Degree by Research (HDR) students to undertake the research degree in an ethical and structured way. Outlined below are the standard mandatory elements of the research training program at Deakin.

Research Induction

Completion of the Research Induction program provided by Deakin Research is a mandatory requirement for all Higher Degree by Research (HDR) students prior to Confirmation of Candidature.

Research Integrity

Research Integrity training covers the requirements of the Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research and other matters such as privacy and copyright. It is compulsory for all HDR students in the first month of candidature.

HDR Respectful Behaviour

The HDR Respectful Behaviour module aims to foster a respectful, safe and inclusive learning and working environment for all students, staff and visitors. It consists of seven topics and is designed to be completed within your first six weeks of study.


As part of the PhD Xtra program you are required to complete a minimum of one unit of coursework. Some academic units require more than one as each academic unit has different requirements for coursework.

Mandatory coursework is offered by the following academic units:

  • >  Faculty of Arts and Education/National Indigenous Knowledge Education Research Innovation (NIKERI) Institute
  • >  Faculty of Business and Law
  • >  Faculty of Health
  • >  Faculty of Science, Engineering and Built Environment/Institute for Frontier Materials/Institute for Intelligent Systems Research and Innovation/A2I2
