HDR Students

One of the many benefits of undertaking a higher degree by research at Deakin is the flexibility to supplement your research by completing additional training or gaining new experiences. These can be built into your Individual Learning Plan and adapted to your stage of candidature, development needs or career aspirations. We are here to support you to make the most of your time with the support of your supervisory team.


We encourage you to explore and participate in the training and development activities available to you.

Individual Learning Plan

The Individual Learning Plan (ILP) is an online tool that allows you to plan, document and demonstrate the range of knowledge and skills you acquire during your candidature. It can be customised to suit your personal preferences and goals, and modified as required throughout your candidature. Together, you and your supervisor develop a learning plan to help you achieve your goals for your research and career path.

Online Supervisors Professional Development Modules

This site provides supervisors at Deakin with an avenue for maintaining their professional development requirements. The practise of student supervision is recognised at Deakin as a complex teaching task. As supervisors should provide guidance in all matters relating to good research practice, it is necessary for the supervisor to keep abreast of literature, trends and new practices relating to research supervision. To meet the conditions of the HDR Supervision procedure, supervisors are required to complete appropriate professional development activities every three years.

Supervision Fast Track Workshop Series

"Fast-Track” Supervisor Training provides an accelerated means of meeting the requirements of becoming a principal supervisor. The basic idea is that a trainee supervisor can involve themselves in assisting with supervision of students at various stages of candidature, and by doing these steps with different students (who need not be in your own School) the timelines can be shortened considerably.
