Lime shared e-bike program – frequently asked questions
The company Lime will operate the electric bike share program in Geelong, supported by Deakin.
Visit Lime for more information on the e-bikes.
We’re always looking for ways to get more people cycling to Deakin and e-bikes provide the perfect opportunity to use the available network of on-road and off-road bike routes to our campuses. e-bikes shorten journey times and provide a flexible way of getting to campus.
e-bikes are different to standard pedal bikes. Lime e-bikes use interchangeable batteries that integrate with an electric motor to assist propulsion. The motor adds to the rider’s pedal power when the bike detects that assistance is required, for example when travelling uphill.
e-bikes will be introduced across Geelong during September, with more to be introduced over time where demand is indicated. Look out for e-bikes on the Waurn Ponds and Waterfront campuses. You will also find them concentrated in areas that people want to use them, including public transport hubs.
Use the Lime mobile app to find where the e-bikes are located and unlock your bike. Park your e-bike safely to avoid impeding pedestrians or cars, for example by using bike hoops. See more information about parking in the FAQ below.
You’ll be able to rent the e-bikes by using the Lime mobile app. Visit your device's app store to download the app.
To find an e-bike near you, simply open the Lime app on your phone. You'll automatically be taken to the map screen, showing all available Lime e-bikes in your area. If you don't see any vehicle icons displayed on the map, zoom out to search a wider area.
These e-bikes are designed to reach speeds of 25 km/h, with power-assisted pedalling in full accordance with Australian Standards and the Victorian road rules. Speeds will be limited in some zones, to ensure community safety. Some precincts that you can ride will have a “slow zone” to help riders and pedestrians safely share the space.
With advanced technology reporting back to Lime and integrated changeable batteries, freshly charged batteries are frequently swapped onto Lime’s e-bikes. Additionally Lime utilises on-board technology that tells you how much charge the battery has.
You can ride a Lime e-bike in Geelong, Melbourne or anywhere that they operate. In the Lime App tap the e-bike icon or “scan to ride” to see the rate that will apply.

The e-bike trial program is limited to the city of Geelong. If you ride an e-bike outside the area, you may receive a penalty charge to your Lime account. The Lime app will indicate the ridable area and will warn you if you ride outside the area or enter a “no-go” zone. Some precincts that you can ride will have a “slow zone” to help riders and pedestrians safely share the space.
Lime provides in-app content, including videos, instructing riders how to safely use the e-bikes. The content includes how to find an e-bike near you, how much it costs and how to park the e-bike and end your ride.
Make sure you park your bike safely, out of the way of pedestrians and cars, as failure to do so may result in a fine.
As part of the trial there are several designated parking locations, including at Deakin’s campuses, which are the most reliable locations to find and hire e-bikes. We encourage you to return your bike to one of these locations when possible, as it will help ensure constant availability for all users.
If finishing your ride outside a designated parking location, try to locate a suitable bike parking facility. City of Greater Geelong provides an interactive map of bike parking facility locations. Parking at a bike parking facility will help to ensure you meet your obligations to park the bike safely.
