China Scholarship Council - Deakin University

Joint Funding Program

The China Scholarship Council (CSC) and Deakin University (DU) Joint Funding Program was established in October 2018, providing scholarship and placement opportunities to Chinese students conducting research in Australia.

The scholarship

Successful applicants sponsored through this prestigious program will undertake their PhD degree or conduct research as a visiting PhD student, post-doctoral fellow or visiting scholar in Deakin's world-class facilities supported by global leaders in their field.

Applications can be submitted between September through to February of each year. Applicants seeking funding and applying to study at Deakin University must meet the requirements and deadlines of both the China Scholarship Council and Deakin University.

PhD students

The China Scholarship Council and Deakin University will jointly sponsor up to 20 Chinese students each year to undertake a PhD at Deakin University.

This particular program is to undertake a PhD at Deakin University for up to 4 years (48 months).

Important Dates

  • Expressions of Interest close 5pm AEST, Wednesday 8 February 2023*
  • Full applications close 5pm AEST, Tuesday 14 February 2023.

Successful applicants will receive an unconditional offer of enrolment from Deakin University and a letter of invitation by March 1, 2023.

*This is the last day an expression of interest will be accepted. Though conditions vary, we recommend lodging your enquiry by 5pm AEST to avoid disappointment.

Benefits

Deakin University will provide:

  • A full tuition fee waiver for a PhD for up to 4 years
  • A supplementary top-up allowance to increase the China Scholarships Council stipend to the Australian Research Training Program stipend amount ($A28,900 per annum tax exempt – 2022 rate) for the same duration as the China Scholarship Council stipend
  • The China Scholarship Council will provide:

    • Living allowance in the form of a stipend including overseas student health insurance for up to 4 years
    • Australian visa application fees
    • A return international economy airfare to Australia

Eligibility

All applicants need to satisfy the following selection criteria:

  • be a current citizen of the People's Republic of China
  • be enrolling full-time and on-campus at Deakin University
  • meet all Deakin admission entry requirements, including English language proficiency requirements
  • be intending to pursue a PhD in one of the priority areas identified above
  • satisfy any other selection criteria set out by the China Scholarship Council

Application Process

Please submit an initial application enquiry to the International Research Partnerships team who will facilitate the application process with the appropriate Faculty or Institute. Please include your project title, preferred supervisor or potential supervisor if known and evidence (attach a document) that you meet the University English language requirements.

If you are invited to lodge a formal application to Deakin University, applicants should select the scholarship type "China Scholarship Council-Deakin University Joint Funding Program".

Deakin University will evaluate applications and send successful applicants a letter of acceptance by 1 March, 2023.

If you receive an offer from Deakin University, you must apply separately to the China Scholarship Council for the applicable scholarship.

Visiting PhD students

The China Scholarship Council and Deakin University will jointly sponsor up to 20 selected Chinese students each year to conduct studies and research at Deakin University.

This particular program is for Chinese visiting PhD students for up to 2 years (24 months).

  • This is the last day an application will be accepted. Though conditions vary, we recommend lodging your enquiry by 5pm AEST to avoid disappointment.

Successful applicants will receive an unconditional offer of enrolment from Deakin University and a letter of invitation by March 1, 2023.

  • A supplementary top-up allowance to increase the China Scholarship Council stipend to the Australian Research Training Program stipend amount (A$28,900 per annum tax exempt – 2022 rate) for the same duration as the China Scholarship Council stipend

Post-doctoral fellows and visiting scholars

The China Scholarship Council and Deakin University will jointly sponsor up to 10 post-doctoral fellows and visiting scholars each year to conduct research at Deakin University for up to 12 months.

This scholarship program is open for applications between September and December each year.

  • This is the last day an expression of interest will be accepted. Though conditions vary, we recommend lodging your enquiry by 5pm AEST to avoid disappointment.

Successful applicants will receive a copy of a letter of invitation by 1 January.

Deakin University strongly recommends that candidates familiarise themselves with the CSC scholarship's specific conditions on the China Scholarship Council website prior to applying to the program.

Application process

Before applying, applicants should obtain approval from their university in China or the nearest Consulate-General of the People's Republic of China if currently residing outside of mainland China.

Please submit an initial application enquiry to the International Research Partnerships team who will facilitate the process at Deakin with the relevant Faculty or Institute. Please include your project title, preferred supervisor or potential supervisor if known and evidence (attach a document) that you meet the University English language requirements.

The Faculty or Institute will contact applicants directly to provide specific instructions on applying for the post-doctoral fellow or visiting scholar program.

Deakin University will evaluate applications and send successful applicants the required documentation.

The applicant will then need to apply separately to the China Scholarship Council.
