Research topic

Textile wastes make up more than 20% of all the solid wastes globally. Currently, only a small fraction of the textile wastes are being recycled due to the difficulties and high costs to separate and recover the different materials in the textiles. Most of the textile wastes go to incinerators, landfills and are even released into rivers and seas. Most of these wastes bring about concerns due to their slow degradation and severe hazards to the water systems. Understanding their biodegradation is essential for reducing their environmental hazards, as this will guide the design and production of more environmentally friendly textiles and will also help the development of more efficient degradation process.

A PhD scholarship is available for studying the biodegradation of different textile wastes. The candidate will have the opportunity to work with world leading scientists within the Institute for Frontier Materials of Deakin University Australia.

Project aim

In this project, the biodegradation of textile wastes by microorganisms will be evaluated. The student will need to identify, isolation and characterisation of efficient microorganisms (bacterial and/or fungi) that are capable of degrading textile wastes with natural, synthetic and mixed fibres.

This scholarship is available over 3 years.

  • Stipend of $28,900 per annum tax exempt (2022 rate)
  • Relocation allowance of $500-1500 (for single to family) for students moving from interstate
  • International students only:  Tuition fees offset for the duration of 4 years. Single Overseas Student Health Cover policy for the duration of the student visa.

Eligibility criteria

To be eligible you must:

  • be either a domestic or international candidate.
  • meet Deakin's PhD entry requirements
  • be enrolling full time and hold an honours degree (first class) or an equivalent standard master's degree with a substantial research component.

Additional desirable criteria include:

  • A background in microbiology, biotechnology, chemistry or chemical engineering including knowledge about textiles/polymers/plastics and enzymes.
  • Extensive hands-on skills in bacterial isolation, culture, and characterization.
  • Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary research team.
  • Experience in characterisation of materials using different techniques such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and confocal microscopy.
