As part of your scholarship application you will normally be required to submit documentary evidence in support of your application. Supporting documentation must be sent to scholarship-docs@deakin.edu.au with your Applicant ID number in the Subject line.

What do I need to provide?

Your documents must confirm the information you provide in your scholarship application. This documentation will be reviewed as part of your application and should be as specific as possible. Remember: it is the quality of documentation, not the quantity that will be most useful in assessing your application.

Financial hardship

The following are the three categories of financial hardship depending on your current financial circumstances. The supporting documentation for each category is different.

During the application process, if you state you receive a Centrelink benefit you must provide a current Centrelink Income Statement.

The Centrelink Income Statement must:

  • be a recent statement (ie. dated in the last 2 weeks)
  • show your correct name and address
  • indicate the benefit you receive (this should be the same as in your application)
  • show the payment amount and date

We recommend you download this statement as a PDF directly from the Centrelink website and email it to scholarship-docs@deakin.edu.au with your Applicant ID number in the Subject line as part of your application.

The following documentation is not acceptable:

  • Family Tax Benefit statements as this benefit is based on estimated taxable income and not actual taxable income
  • screen captures of the Centrelink website or mobile app
  • statements older than one month
  • letters from Centrelink indicating you have applied for a benefit
  • Centrelink payment summaries statements (ie. group certificates)
  • Centrelink reporting/interview statements

During the application process, if you state you are self-supporting and have an income under the HELP repayment threshold you must provide a certified copy of your current Tax Assessment Notice and a Statutory Declaration.

The copy of your Tax Assessment Notice must:

  • be the most current Tax Assessment Notice available (ie. for the previous financial year)
  • show your correct name and address

In the Statutory Declaration you must:

  • declare you are self-supporting and do not rely on others for your financial support
  • provide an income estimate for the current financial year

Any student who is found to have submitted false supporting documentation will be referred to the Faculty Student Misconduct Committee. Making a false statutory declaration is an act of perjury. Perjury is a criminal offence and the penalties can be severe.

The following documentation is not acceptable:

  • bank statements
  • group certificates
  • pay-slips
  • an old Tax Assessment Notice (ie. not for the previous financial year).

During the application process, if you state you are family supported and have a combined income under the HELP repayment threshold, you must provide certified copies of the current Tax Assessment Notice of everyone who provides for your support including yourself and a Statutory Declaration.

The copy of the Tax Assessment Notice/s must:

  • be the most current Tax Assessment Notice available for everyone who contributes to your financial support (ie. for the previous financial year)
  • show the correct names and addresses

In the Statutory Declaration you must declare:

  • you are financially dependent and list the names of the people who provide for your financial support
  • provide an income estimate for the current financial year

The following documentation is not acceptable:

  • bank statements
  • group certificates
  • pay-slips
  • an old Tax Assessment Notice (ie. not for the previous financial year).

Disability or medical condition

During the application process, if you state you have a disability or medical condition which impacts your education, you will need to provide a statement from your Health Care professional which confirms your statement.

The letter/statement must:

  • confirm the information you have provided in your statement
  • indicate the level of impact your disability or medical condition has had on your studies

The following documentation is acceptable:

  • medical certificate or letter from a doctor or health care practitioner
  • a Learning Access Plan (LAP) from the Disability Resource Centre (DRC)

Other forms of disadvantage including rural

Other disadvantages

If you are finding it difficult to provide evidence of your disadvantage you can submit a signed Statement of Support written by a lawyer/solicitor, accountant, religious or community leader, school principal or teacher. A Statement of Support is essentially a letter written by someone on your behalf. This letter should be as specific as possible about what you are experiencing and the impact it is having on your studies and must contain an original signature. Please do not provide a Statement of support written by a family member as these will not be considered.

Rural

During the application process, if you state you are from a rural or regional area you do not need to provide evidence of this. Your address details will be confirmed via StudentConnect (or VTAC).

Community and volunteer involvement

During the application process, if you state you have participated in community and volunteer activities, you will need to provide evidence of this involvement.

The evidence of participation must:

  • confirm your level of involvement in the activity/program
  • be from the community or volunteer organisation/program mentioned in your application

The following documentation is acceptable:

  • certificate of participation/involvement
  • Statement of Support written and signed by a nominee of the community or organisation/program

The following documentation is not acceptable:

  • résumé outlining community or volunteer involvement
  • personal statement outlining community or volunteer involvement

Due date for documents

The supporting documentation due date is detailed on the individual scholarship pages and will vary depending on the scholarships applied for. Often the supporting documentation will be due when the scholarship closes.

Supporting documents submitted after the due date will not be considered and your application will not be assessed.
