Boot Camp for Accounting Vacationers!
A Vacation Work Boot Camp was held on 7 July, 2011 to assist students applying for accounting vacation work positions over the summer of 2011/2012. It was based on the successful Graduate Recruitment Boot Camp held in March for final year students preparing for graduate applications. Around 400 students attended these Boot Camps in 2011.
The Boot Camp model is a half-day event held during the trimester break. Following a mini-conference model, the Boot Camp format involves the big and mid-tier accounting firms and industry associations presenting to students on the concept of graduate and/or vacation work recruitment, the application process, interviews and assessment centres. The Boot Camps held this year featured:
- panels of recent Deakin graduates or vacationers who talked about their own application experience and provided advice for current students
- resume checking by employers
- a breakout session for international students providing advice on increasing employability skills and job seeking hints and tips
- networking for students and employers during morning tea and lunch
Careers and Employment received very positive feedback from the students who attended. Students appreciated the opportunity to prepare for the application process for both graduate and vacation work positions, and to network with employers.
