Career fairs: bringing employers and students together

Careers and Employment kicked off the second half of 2009 with a busy line up of recent events.

Vacation Work Fair

The 2009 Vacation Work Fair attracted 13 top tier organisations offering structured vacation work and cooperative placements for students in their penultimate year. More than 300 students from the Faculty of Business and Law attended the fair. The event was a huge success and reinforced the importance of careers fairs to not only raise awareness of career opportunities available to Deakin University students but also to highlight the talents of Deakin University students to industry employers. Additionally, the Vacation Work Fair provided an opportunity for Careers and Employment staff to develop and maintain strong ongoing relationships with key graduate recruiters.

Volunteer Fair

Three Volunteer Fairs were held simultaneously at the Burwood, Waurn Ponds and Warrnambool Campuses in August. Students from all Faculties and year levels had the opportunity to meet representatives from dozens of not-for-profit organisations seeking student volunteers. The Volunteer Fairs aimed to encourage Deakin University students to get involved, gain valuable work experiences and make a difference. There was a real buzz around the fairs as students engaged enthusiastically with representatives. Some feedback from organisations in attendance included:

"I thought the expo was fantastic, really well organised with a great diversity of groups and wonderful support on the day. Thank you for the invitation and we will be very interested in attending next year" (Conservation Volunteers)

"The interest from students was fantastic and there were lots of them, loved the venue, a great event" (International Exchange Program)

"The fair was a huge success and it was a pleasure being part of it" (Lode)
