Deakin students facing rising cost-of-living pressures can grab nutritious, budget-friendly lunches on campus, with the University introducing $5 meals available at Geelong Waterfront, Waurn Ponds, Warrnambool and Burwood locations.

Available on Mondays and Thursdays throughout the trimester study period at Geelong and Burwood campuses, and on designated days at Warrnambool, the freshly prepared meals include both a meat and vegetarian option, with menus changing each week.

Deakin’s Caretaker Vice-Chancellor Matthew Clarke said the initiative was designed to give students more affordable, healthy food choices.

‘We know that tertiary education is an investment and we want to make sure every student has what they need to succeed, including support to make everyday costs a bit more manageable,’ Professor Clarke said.

‘Groceries are one of the most common cost-of-living stressors, with increased prices making it harder for students to eat well.

‘As part of our refreshed on-campus food offering, introducing the $5 meals on campus gives students a practical way to reduce pressure on their weekly budget while staying connected to campus life.’

A rotating menu of two choices including stir fries, pastas and curries is on offer from 12 noon until sold out on the selected days from locations at Waterfront Pantry, Geelong Waterfront; Union Green Kitchen, Waurn Ponds; Hopkins River Café, Warrnambool; and Lower Level Building H, Burwood.

Supporting student success

The program forms part of a broader shared commitment between the University and the Deakin University Student Association (DUSA) to support student wellbeing and success through practical cost-of-living assistance, allowing students to stay connected, healthy and focused on their studies.

DUSA also offers students free breakfast every Wednesday morning during Trimester 1 and 2 at the Geelong Waterfront, Waurn Ponds and Burwood Campuses, and access on selected weeks to free fruit, vegetables and other ingredients through their Food Pantries across locations, along with a recipe book featuring quick, nutritious meal ideas to make at home.

‘DUSA understands that cost-of-living pressures continue to affect students. That’s why we are continuing to provide a wide range of services including free food programs, transport assistance services and financial wellbeing assistance,’ said DUSA President, Noah Smith.

The combined support for students extends beyond food, with critical access to basic household and cleaning supplies, personal hygiene and health products, including free period product vending machines across campuses, and personalised financial wellbeing support.

'Every student’s circumstances are different, but no one’s potential should be limited by them. At Deakin, there is a range of support services, resources and financial assistance options students can access when they need them,’ Professor Clarke said.

‘We want students to feel comfortable reaching out for assistance and confident they will be supported in the way that best meets their needs.’
