Deakin University gathers to officially invest new Chancellor
Media Release
5 February 2026
Deakin University’s seventh and first female Chancellor, Claire Higgins, was invested by the Governor of Victoria, Professor the Honourable Margaret Gardner AC, at an official ceremony held at the Geelong Waterfront Campus today.
An experienced Board Chair and Director whose leadership style focuses on ethics, integrity and clarity of purpose, Mrs Higgins has extensive management, commercial, health, safety, and governance experience and succeeds Mr John Stanhope AM, who served in the position for 10 years.
All University staff were invited to attend and hear from their new Chancellor, who spoke about the legacy of previous leaders and the challenges and opportunities facing the University.
‘The past five years have tested universities in unprecedented ways. Deakin has not merely endured – it has excelled. Under Council leadership, Deakin has strengthened its reputation as one of Australia’s most innovative universities, pioneering excellence in digital education that is flexible, inclusive and globally connected,’ Mrs Higgins said.
‘The next five years will demand courage – to make difficult decisions, to support staff through change, and to prepare students for careers not yet imagined. I will listen, support, and lead with integrity.
‘I am mindful of those who served before me and humbled by the trust placed in me today – inspired by Deakin’s past, confident in its present, optimistic about its future.’
In presenting Mrs Higgins for Investiture, Deakin Vice-Chancellor Professor Iain Martin highlighted her exceptional blend of experience and unwavering dedication to serving others, describing her as an outstanding leader for the University.
‘Claire is uniquely qualified to lead our Council. She brings extensive governance experience spanning corporate and social service sectors, combining strategic leadership with a deep commitment to community service,’ Professor Martin said.
‘A great believer in fairness and passionate about building organisational capacity, Claire understands that the best outcomes emerge through committed collaboration and partnership.’
‘Her proven leadership, focus on excellence, and commitment to community align perfectly with our values and strategic direction.’
A resident of the Bellarine Peninsula and parent of a Deakin graduate, Mrs Higgins commenced office on 1 January 2026 as the University enters its second half-century, following their 50th year celebrations last year.
Mrs Higgins’ first formal functions in her new role will also take place this month as more than 5000 students graduate from Deakin with a number of ceremonies to be held in Geelong and Warrnambool.
