Research aim
Indonesia has branded itself on the global stage as the home of 'moderate Islam', yet in the world of Islamic learning Indonesia is a consumer in a one-way flow. Indonesian students still flock to centres of learning in the Middle East where Indonesian thought is not studied. This PhD project will address two interlinked questions: To what extent is moderate Islam expected to elevate Indonesia’s standing among Muslim states? How is Indonesia affected by the current one-way flow of Islamic knowledge from the Middle East?
Background information
The candidate will work as part of a team, supported by the Australian Research Council. The candidate would conduct field trips to Indonesia and conduct interview, collect material as well as carry out desktop research and engage with the relevant literature in international relations to investigate how the pursuit of moderate Islam has affected its international standing. More specifically whether moderate Islam has served Indonesia’s standing in the Muslim world.
