Discover the Deakin difference
Deakin is committed to enabling all our students and staff to respect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledge, culture and values. Acknowledging, building and sustaining understanding between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians starts with recognition that these lands have been the home of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples for many thousands of years.
Universities have a special part to play in reconciliation between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non-Indigenous Australians. Deakin welcomes the responsibility of educating the next generation of ambitious First Nations thinkers, alongside our commitment to promoting issues of social justice and human rights.
Whether you're learning, teaching, researching or working in a professional capacity at Deakin, opportunities to engage with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and knowledge are always encouraged.
Through Community-Based Education programs, the NIKERI Institute enables Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians the flexibility to gain access to higher education while still being able to maintain family and community obligations.
Deakin offers a range of Indigenous study options across a number of interest areas. Depending on the course or units you choose, and your obligations at home, you can study in intensive blocks through the NIKERI Institute or enrol full or part time within the relevant faculty. Regardless of study area, you'll develop tools and skills that will be useful in any workplace.
