The Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, has identified researchers at Deakin as key to the innovation needed for the creation of hi-tech jobs and knowledge based industries of the future.

Writing in the Geelong Advertiser, the Prime Minister said: "I am passionate about education because it has the power to transform people's lives and give them new opportunities.

"That why I see Deakin University as so important in the transition occurring in Geelong developing the research base and leading the innovation needed for the hi-tech jobs and knowledge based industries of the future.

"Our $37 million investment in the $100 million carbon fibre centre at Waurn Ponds will kick start innovation in the aerospace, automotive and textiles industries."

The Prime Minister also wrote of the importance of health care to Geelong.

"Health care is another area where you are ahead," she said.

"We've strongly backed Deakin University with its medical school and a growing number of other health courses on offer."
