Recently the Australian Research Council announced the outcomes of the second evaluation of the Excellence in Research for Australia.  In the Deakin Research Communications article ERA Confirms Research Boost it was reported that Deakin performed very well achieving world standard or above in 74 per cent of our Broad Fields of Research compared with 40 per cent in the 2010 round and world standard or above in 69 per cent of our specific discipline fields, up from 44 per cent in 2010.

For IFM the results were equally pleasing, the highest ranking possible (5) was awarded in the categories of ‘Materials Engineering’ and ‘Macromolecular and Materials Chemistry’.  IFM can count itself as one of the leading materials research institutes in Australia with only 4 other Universities achieving this result. Additionally, the research areas of Nanotechnology, Manufacturing Engineering and Mechanical Engineering scored a ranking of 4 which is classed as above world standard.

The challenge for IFM going forward is not only to maintain, but also strengthen the research excellence reflected in these rankings.
