Professor Kingsbury is Director of the Centre for Citizenship, Development and Human Rights at ADRI. He holds a Personal Chair in the School of International and Political Studies at Deakin University. He is Secretary/Public Officer of the Balibo House Trust, and a board member of the East Timor Hearts Foundation (which provides free open heart surgery for Timorese). His wife Rae is the Honorary Consul for Timor-Leste in Melbourne.

Kirsty Sword Gusmao is the founder and Chair of the ALOLA Foundation (which supports women and children in East Timor), and a Goodwill Ambassador for Education. Xanana Gusmao is the Prime Minister and former President of East Timor (Timor Leste). They are the subjects of a film directed by Alex Meillier called Alias Ruby Blade after Kirsty's nom de guerre during the years of resistance against Indonesia.
