Accommodation scholarship helps medical student maintain work-life balance

Sarah Beynon

Sarah Beynon, recipient of the Helen and Geoff Handbury Accommodation Scholarship shares her experiences:

‘At the beginning of my degree I was fortunate enough to receive the Helen and Geoff Handbury Scholarship. I am incredibly grateful for the financial and academic support this scholarship has provided me and feel honoured to be embarking on my second year of graduate medical studies at Deakin University.

2010 was a challenging, yet incredibly rewarding and exciting year. Being involved in the Medicine course has truly nurtured my motivation and passion to become a doctor.

Given the demanding nature of the Medicine course, I have had to significantly reduce the amount of casual work I undertake. The scholarship therefore helps to support my living and study expenses, enabling me to fully commit to my studies. It has made it possible for me to relocate and settle into a new life in Geelong, and to purchase my own medical textbooks and clinical examination equipment to facilitate my learning. In addition to this I also look forward to taking advantage of the added support to attend student health conferences in the future.

With less financial stress and pressure I have been able to maintain more of a work-life balance, which I feel is very important to move successfully through the course and develop as a person. I look forward to being able to give back to the community as a fully qualified doctor once I graduate.’
