DUELI courses

DUELI is one of Australia's best university English language centres. We offer expert teaching and small classes, designed to help you engage with other students and your tutor. Courses start every five weeks and include 20 hours of weekly teaching, plus five hours of study in the Independent Learning Centre (ILC).


Our courses

We offer fantastic English programs for students at all levels. Whether you want to improve your general English or meet the requirements for a Deakin University award course, you'll find the course that matches your needs.

You can study a direct EAP pathway to get into one of the following Deakin courses:

  • bachelor's
  • master's
  • PhD
  • study abroad programs
  • Deakin College Diploma program
  • Deakin College Foundation program.

Classes and tuition

On arrival, you'll be assessed and placed on a course that best suits your skills and needs. Our courses run every five weeks and classes are small with 15 students on average, per class. You'll get 20 hours of face-to-face tuition per week, as well as five hours a week of supervised learning in our ILC.

Entry requirements

Acceptance into a DUELI course is subject to your English level, which is assessed on arrival. If you have achieved a certain IELTS score, you can find out what your specific course requirements are for the individual courses below.

IELTS course requirements

Intensive Academic Preparation (IAP)

Offered at Melbourne Burwood Campus

This high-level program is for students with IELTS of 6.5 or above (or equivalent), who've met university admission requirements and want to stand out in their university program. Over the course of five weeks, we'll help you develop your writing, reading, listening and speaking skills so that you can succeed at university.

The EAP 1 program

Offered at Melbourne Burwood Campus and Geelong Waterfront Campus 

EAP 1 sets you up on your first step to meeting the English language requirements of Deakin’s undergraduate courses (excluding nursing) and Deakin College Diploma and Foundation programs. It’s followed by EAP 2, EAP 3 and EAP 4.

EAP 2

Offered at Melbourne Burwood Campus and Geelong Waterfront Campus 

EAP 2 is the second step in meeting the English language requirements of Deakin's undergraduate courses. It's also the English language direct entry pathway to Deakin College Diploma and Foundation programs (except for their Diploma of Media and Communication, which needs completion of EAP 3).

EAP 3

Offered at Melbourne Burwood Campus and Geelong Waterfront Campus 

EAP 3 is the third and final step to meeting the English language requirements of Deakin’s undergraduate award courses (excluding nursing). Successful completion will also give you direct entry into Deakin’s study abroad programs and Deakin College’s Diploma of Media and Communication.

The EAP pathway 4

Offered at Melbourne Burwood Campus and Geelong Waterfront Campus

Successful completion of EAP 4 will give you direct entry into Deakin's postgraduate programs.

General English 1 (GE 1)

Offered at Melbourne Burwood Campus

This is a beginner-level course to help you develop your English for personal use.

General English 2 (GE 2)

Offered at Melbourne Burwood Campus

This is a first-level elementary course to help you develop your English for personal use.

General English 3 (GE 3)

Offered at Melbourne Burwood Campus and Geelong Waterfront Campus

This is a second-level elementary course to help you develop your English language skills.

General English 4 (GE 4)

Offered at Melbourne Burwood Campus and Geelong Waterfront Campus 

The first pre-intermediate level course to help you develop your English language skills.

General English 5 (GE 5)

Offered at Melbourne Burwood Campus

The second pre-intermediate intermediate courses to help you develop your English for personal and professional use. Students who successfully complete this program can move to GE 6 or EAP 1.

General English 6 (GE 6)

Offered at Melbourne Burwood Campus

The first intermediate course to help you develop your English for personal and professional use.

General English 7 (GE 7)

Offered at Melbourne Burwood Campus

The second intermediate level course offered to help you develop your English language skills for both personal and professional reasons.

General English 8 (GE 8)

Offered at Melbourne Burwood Campus

The first upper-intermediate level course to help you develop your English language skills for both personal and professional reasons.

General English 9 (GE 9)

Offered at Melbourne Burwood Campus

The second upper-intermediate level course to help you develop your English language skills for both personal and professional reasons.

General English 10 (GE 10)

Offered at Melbourne Burwood Campus and Geelong Waterfront Campus 

The advanced course if you’d like to excel at English, whether for personal or professional use.

IELTS preparation

Offered at Melbourne Burwood Campus

Running over five weeks, this program is for students with a minimum IELTS score of 5.5 (or equivalent), and will offer strategies and practical help to prepare you for the IELTS test.

English for Nursing

Offered at Melbourne Burwood Campus and Geelong Waterfront Campus

This five-week intensive course provides a direct entry pathway if you'd like to study Deakin's Bachelor of Nursing course. You'll learn everything from communication skills and adapting to working as a nurse in Australia to working as part of a team and critical thinking in the Australian nursing environment.

English for Teaching

Offered at Melbourne Burwood Campus

The English for Teaching program is an intensive course that offers a direct entry pathway to Deakin's Bachelor of Teaching and Master of Teaching degrees.
