Welcome to the CMFI
The Centre for Material and Fibre Innovation (CMFI) is the largest multidisciplinary research group working on a range of materials. In the 2011 national report on the Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA), our materials research is ranked in the highest rating band of 5, which signifies well above world standard!
The Centre is a research intensive unit within the Institute for Technology Research and Innovation (ITRI). Academics in the Centre also contribute to the teaching of both undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Engineering and Science.
Our core expertise lies in metals and light metals, fibres and fibrous materials, composites and polymers, bio and nano materials. We have close working relationships with both local and international companies and research institutions in relevant areas. Research in the Centre is supported advanced modelling, pilot scale processing and state-of-the-art characterisation facilities.
Our research students and staff come from over 30 different countries, and enjoy regular social events such as table tennis, cricket, badminton, and traditional Australian BBQ!
