Find the English language course for you
Develop your English reading, writing, listening and speaking skills with a DUELI course. Most courses run for five weeks at our Melbourne Burwood Campus, with nine intakes each year. Selected courses are also offered online.
English for Academic Purposes (EAP)
Location: Melbourne Burwood Campus, online*
Duration: 5–20 weeks
Prepare for undergraduate or postgraduate study by developing report writing, essay writing, research skills, and speaking and communication skills. To progress to the next EAP level, you must obtain a final assessment result of 60% or higher.
Introductory Academic Program (IAP)
Location: Melbourne Burwood Campus
Duration: 5 weeks
For students with IELTS of 6.5 or above (or equivalent) who have met University admission requirements and want to strengthen academic writing, reading, listening and speaking skills needed for study at Deakin.
English for Teaching (EFT)
Location: Melbourne Burwood Campus, online*
Duration: 5 weeks
Prepare for entry into Deakin’s Bachelor of Education or postgraduate teaching degrees, including the Master of Teaching. To enrol, you must have an IELTS score of 7.0 or have completed the EAP 4 program with a score of 70%. To successfully complete the EFT program, you must get a final course result of 60% or higher.
General English (GE)
Location: Melbourne Burwood Campus
Duration: 5–45 weeks
Improve your English for everyday communication, study or work, with eight levels from Beginner to Advanced. To progress from one GE level to the next GE level, you need to achieve an overall score of 55%.
English for Commerce
Location: Melbourne Burwood Campus
Duration: 5 weeks
Develop the English skills used in accounting, law, finance and marketing. To enrol, you will need to complete EAP 2 with a score of 60% or equivalent or have completed the required placement test score. To successfully complete the English for Commerce program, you must get a final course result of 60% or higher.
International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Preparation
Location: Melbourne Burwood Campus, online*
Duration: 5 weeks
Prepare for the IELTS examination by becoming familiar with the examination format and improving your listening, reading, writing and speaking skills. To enrol, you must have a minimum IELTS score of 6.0 or equivalent.
English study tour programs at DUELI
DUELI offers English language programs for universities, professional and private education groups, and government organisations. Group program students can join one of our standard programs or we can tailor a program to suit your needs, combining English language learning with the experience of studying in Australia. Programs can be delivered on campus or online.*
Entry requirements and pathways
Acceptance into your English language course is subject to your English level. You will undertake 20 hours of face-to-face tuition per week, as well as five hours a week of supervised learning in our Independent Learning Centre. Successful completion of English for Academic Purposes pathway programs can provide you with English entry into Deakin University and Deakin College.

Where you will study
DUELI is located at Deakin’s Melbourne Burwood Campus in Victoria and select courses are available online.* When you study an English language course, you have access to Deakin services and facilities, including the library and medical and fitness centres. Plus, enjoy free memberships to the DUELI Club and Deakin University Student Association.
On-campus learning
The Melbourne Burwood Campus is a welcoming place to connect with a diverse community of students. The campus is accessible to Melbourne's key transport hubs and a 30-minute drive from the city centre.
Independent Learning Centre
The Independent Learning Centre provides dedicated spaces for English language students, including a resource room, conversation room and computer lab. We have teachers in each of these areas to help you with your work. Centre facilities include:
- online resources to develop language skills
- DVDs to improve listening and comprehension skills
- resources for pronunciation and listening comprehension skills
- daily newspapers, magazines and books.
Online learning
Deakin is a leader in online study, with over 40 years of experience in distance and online education. Our English language programs are delivered through our innovative online learning environment. You can access class materials, assessments and interact with your peers and teachers in real-time.

Are you a current or past DUELI student? Gain work experience in a professional environment and practice your English by joining one of our volunteer programs. Email our team to find out more.
Support new students during their orientation which takes place every five weeks. Assist with organising and managing events, showing visitors around campus and helping with ongoing student activity programs. You will have opportunities to develop your leadership, event management and customer service skills.
Have you completed your English language studies and are now studying at Deakin University? Join our leadership program to further develop your English and professional skills while improving your confidence. We aim to create a student-led environment where students drive further opportunities for other students.
Join the buddy program to develop your language, leadership and communication skills, while helping to build connections between international and local students. You will have the opportunity to practice your English, join Deakin University Student Association activities and engage in cross-cultural exchange with Deakin students.
