Meet the Head of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences
Professor Claire Maxwell is a sociologist specialising in education, mobilities and migration, as well as elite studies. Born in Luxembourg, Claire is Australian and joined Deakin in July 2025. She was educated in the UK (Oxford, and Royal Holloway, London), and has held senior leadership positions at the UCL Institute of Education and the University of Copenhagen.
In a rapidly evolving world, Australian society faces a range of political, social, economic, and environmental challenges. The critical, analytical, and social knowledge and skills delivered by a Deakin humanities and social sciences training are more important than ever, locally and globally.
