Why giving through Deakin matters

For more than 50 years, philanthropy has helped shape Deakin’s story. Gifts like yours have opened doors for first-in-family students, supported research tackling big challenges and expanded opportunities across regional and metropolitan communities.

In 2024, half of all donor-scholarships were granted to students in regional and remote areas; 86% supporting those facing social or financial disadvantage – proving how generosity can genuinely level the playing field.

When you give, you join a long tradition of support that changes lives today and creates opportunities far into the future.

Supporting future doctors

After Dr Damion Drapac died shortly after graduating from Deakin’s School of Medicine, his father Michael established the Damion Drapac Centre for Equity in Health Education. This historic donation funds scholarships, mentorship and guidance for medical students from diverse and regional backgrounds. By 2030, 12 Drapac Scholars will be supported each year, allowing aspiring doctors to follow their dream and carry forward Damion’s passion for health equity.

Breaking down barriers for regional students

A $2.8 million donation from Darrell and Anna Wade established the Dawn Wade Foundation Scholarship – Deakin’s largest equity scholarship program. It supports 30 students from Geelong and regional high schools, particularly first-in-family students, providing funding towards tuition, accommodation, wellbeing and living costs. These scholarships give students the opportunity to thrive in ways their families may never have imagined.
