This scholarship is available over three years and offers:
- a stipend of $37,450 per annum tax exempt (2026 rate)
- a fixed top-up stipend of $15,000 per annum (capped at $45,000 over 3 years)
- a relocation allowance of $500–1,500 (for single to family) for students moving from interstate
Research aim
This PhD offers the opportunity to contribute to an important and rapidly emerging field at the intersection of mathematics, economics, and financial education. The candidate will be supported to identify and investigate a focused area within this broader research agenda.
Applications are invited from eligible candidates with an interest in financial education in schools.
The successful candidate will join a dynamic research team with an established track record in designing and studying interventions that support young people to become financially numerate.
Background information
Possible areas of inquiry include:
- How can young people’s funds of knowledge inform equitable and excellent financial education?
- How can real-world mathematics lessons counter emerging financial risks and misinformation?
- What support do teachers need to design finance-related curriculum for diverse learners?
- What knowledge is most powerful when designing innovative finance-related curriculum?
The candidate will receive comprehensive research training and close mentorship within a collaborative team environment.
There will also be opportunities to develop as a teacher educator and contribute to initial teacher education in primary and/or secondary mathematics.
This position would suit a candidate interested in equity, curriculum reform, and preparing young people to navigate increasingly complex financial landscapes.
Am I eligible?
To be eligible you must:
- meet Deakin's PhD entry requirements
- enrol full time
- hold an honours degree (first class) or an equivalent standard masters degree with a substantial research component
- be a domestic student candidate (domestic includes candidates with Australian Citizenship, Australian Permanent Residency, or New Zealand Citizenship)
