Qualifying for Legal Practice in Australia

If you wish to practise law in Australia, but studied Law in a non-Australian jurisdiction, you will need to apply to the Victorian Legal Admissions Board (VLAB) (or the Admitting Authority in another state) for an assessment of your qualifications.

If you are required to study certain academic areas of knowledge to qualify for admission to practice, you will be provided with a letter specifying that required study.

Deakin offers units of study that are accredited by VLAB as teaching the academic areas of knowledge required under the Legal Profession Uniform Admission Rules.

If you have been required to study two or more areas of academic knowledge, then the four-unit Graduate Certificate of Australian Law might be right for you. Recognition of Prior Learning, of up to two units, may be available if the Admitting Authority does not require you to study four units.

If you have been required to study only one area of academic knowledge you can enrol in that unit as a single unit.

Students of the Graduate Certificate of Australian Law who are required to study more than four academic areas of knowledge may study additional single units alongside that course.

If you wish to enrol in the Graduate Certificate of Australian Law or in single units at Deakin, please forward the letter you received from VLAB, or another state’s Admitting Authority, together with your enrolment application.
