Preparing your application

Your application should comprise of a cover letter, a statement addressing the selection criteria and a resume.

Selection Criteria are found in the position description. They  are used to enable a selection panel to assess each applicant's qualifications, skills, abilities, experience and knowledge in relation to the position advertised, and to help selectors distinguish between candidates.

There are generally 2 types of selection criteria:

  • Essential criteria: those particular attributes, qualification/s and experience that are needed to perform the role.
  • Desirable criteria: skills or experience that would be valued by an employer in addition to the essential criteria.

When writing a statement addressing the selection criteria use examples that demonstrate that you have that skill, knowledge or experience. It can be useful to frame your response using the STAR technique:

A good cover letter:

  • Introduces yourself
  • Reflects your interest in the position
  • Presents your key attributes in an interesting and relevant way
  • Briefly demonstrates why you think you are a suitable applicant
  • Makes the employer want to read the rest of your application
  • Is in letter format and is preferably no longer than one page

A good resume:

  • Should be 2-3 pages in length
  • Some headings you could include are:
    • Personal details (your name and contact details)
    • Skills summary
    • Education
    • Professional development
    • Employment experience
    • Selected key achievements
    • Interests
    • Referees - 2 or 3 is preferable and you should include your current direct manager/supervisor

Deakin position descriptions follow a template; the different headings in the position description will give you valuable information about the role, how it fits in the organisation and what will be required of the incumbent:

Position Purpose Why the job exists and its prime purpose
Organisational Context The scope of the work unit and where the position fits, who it supervises and for what purpose; who it reports to, and any budget responsibility
Organisational Relationships The contact the position has with others within and outside of the work unit, Faculty/Institute/Other Area, and external to the University, and for what purpose
Principal Accountabilities Major broad areas of accountability i.e. at the end of a year, what the position is expected to deliver on
Typical Duties Regularly performed duties that explain how the accountabilities are achieved
Selection Criteria The training, qualifications, experience, skills and/or techniques needed to perform the role

Submitting your application

Online applications

  1. From Careers at Deakin select the type of vacancy you wish to apply for. This will take you to a list of vacancies. Select the one you wish to apply for from the Position Title column
  2. Click the "Position Description" button to review or download the position information

    Please note that the position descriptions are in PDF and require Adobe Acrobat Reader available from the Adobe website to open. Adobe Acrobat Reader software has an embedded voice synthesizer or "screen reader" which can read aloud the text in nearly all PDF files

  3. Select "Apply Now"
  4. Complete the online application form
  5. An asterisk (*) indicates that a question is mandatory and you will be unable to submit your application until all the mandatory questions have been completed
  6. Click the browse button to attach the following documents (please attach as a single file where possible, Word or PDF format only) with your online application:
    • Covering Letter
    • Statement addressing the key selection criteria
    • Resume/curriculum vitae
    • Details of successful grant applications (academic positions only)
    • Other relevant documents (where required)
  7. Select "Submit application to Deakin" to submit your application
  8. A message will appear on screen acknowledging your application and includes information regarding the next stage of the process
  9. Please note: You are unable to access your application online after it has been submitted. If you wish to change or withdraw your application you should contact Human Resources on (03) 924 68139.

Non-online applications

  1. Download a copy of the Personal Details form (DOC, 68.5 KB). Please complete and submit along with your application.
  2. Include the following documents with your application:
    • Completed Personal Details form
    • Covering Letter
    • Statement addressing the key selection criteria
    • Resume/curriculum vitae
    • Details of successful grant applications (academic positions only)
    • Other relevant documentation (where required)
  3. Email your application to recruitment@deakin.edu.au

    Please note: Applicants who have not received a request to attend an interview or received further communication within six weeks of the closing date should regard their application as unsuccessful on this occasion.
