About the Project

The renovation and refurbishment of the library at the Geelong Waurn Ponds Campus moves it away from the traditional library model, towards a contemporary one. The library now has fewer books, more technology and a variety of spaces catering for a wide choice of study methods. The spaces facilitate both individual and group study, offering quiet and conversational areas.

Deakin library users require places to study which meet their varying needs of comfort, noise level and computing equipment. The contemporary library concept provides a dynamic range of spaces, recognising the changed role of electronic media, online resources and study methods in the modern university.

The upper levels (Levels 2 & 3) have been refurbished to include:

  • a café/coffee shop adjacent to the entry on level 2
  • new stairs
  • provision of various sized study areas with AV and computer facilities
  • 24 hour access to the computer room used for both study and teaching purposes
  • a delivery area to cope with the significant volume of books circulating through the library

The general aim of the new generation learning spaces is to:

  • make good use of the views to the lake
  • possibly make use of the current perimeter balconies
  • allow for the reduction in the current collection - the library is gradually reducing the size of the book collection
  • allow the consumption of food and drink within the library
