Suburban Rail Loop – Burwood Station
The new Burwood Station will provide direct train access, safer campus connections and improved transport links, making commuting easier for students, staff and visitors.
Suburban Rail Loop to transform access to Burwood Campus
Located on Burwood Highway adjacent to the Burwood campus, the Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) and new Burwood Station, once completed, will deliver direct train services to the Burwood campus for the first time, and link our campuses across the state.
A pedestrian overpass will provide safe and easy crossing over the Burwood Highway from the station to the campus for students and staff.
The completion of the Suburban Rail Loop, which loops from Werribee to Frankston via Melbourne Airport, will also allow for quicker and more frequent train travel to and from the Burwood Campus with services planned for every 6 minutes and travel times expected to be just 3–4 minutes between stations. Suburban Rail Loop East and Burwood Station will also offer:
- integration with local tram and bus services, including the route 75 tram, with a new tram stop outside the station on Burwood Highway
- 750 bike parking spaces as well as new cycling paths, and a cycle crossing at Burwood Highway leading onto the University.
Construction of the Suburban Rail Loop is underway with excavation works at the Burwood site ongoing. To view the latest works notifications visit the Deakin bulletin board or the Big Build website.
Deakin has been, and continues to be, in extensive discussions with the Suburban Rail Loop Authority to ensure the best possible outcomes for our community.

About the Suburban Rail Loop
Suburban Rail Loop is a city shaping project that will transform Victoria’s public transport system. Three transport super hubs at Clayton, Broadmeadows and Sunshine will connect regional services to Suburban Rail Loop, so passengers outside Melbourne won’t have to travel through the CBD to get to employment, hospitals and universities in the suburbs.
Suburban Rail Loop will be delivered in stages over several decades, with Stage One between Cheltenham and Box Hill, including the Burwood Station, to be built first with trains expected to be operational by 2035.
The Suburban Rail Loop Authority will continue to engage with the public throughout the construction process. For further information including updates visit suburbanrailloop.vic.gov.au.
