About the Institute of Teaching and Learning

The primary role of the Institute of Teaching and Learning (ITL) is to work in partnership with academic staff to achieve Deakin’s teaching and learning goal:

To work in partnership with students, staff, industry, employers and governments to ensure that Deakin’s academic programs are of high quality, relevant, informed by contemporary research and create a unique Deakin student experience; and to be recognised as a national leader in flexible education.

We work to achieve Deakin’s teaching and learning goal by providing teaching and learning advice, guidance and support through a combination of central and invited individual, school or faculty specific programs of academic professional development.

ITL also leads university-wide initiatives that advance and promote teaching and learning involving online and flexible educational practices including:

  • The Strategic Teaching and Learning Grant Scheme (STALGS)
  • The Deakin Teaching Awards
  • The Deakin Teaching and Learning Conference.

We work to positively influence Deakin’s teaching and learning philosophy and culture through active participation in:

  • Teaching and learning committees including the Teaching and Learning Committee of Academic Board, the Teaching Spaces Working Party and the Student Experience Committee
  • Policy development initiatives such as the Course Quality Framework
  • Planning of and high level debates on teaching, learning and curriculum design such as the 2009 Flexible Education Symposium.

The purpose of all ITL services, initiatives and professional development programs is to enhance classroom-situated, blended and online teaching and learning at Deakin University.
