The Netherlands have done it and we can too, says Dr Jan Gerrard.

Deakin University's Dr Jan Gerrard believes that the way the Dutch have "prioritised for bikes" is an example that we should follow here in Australia.

Dr Gerrard was talking to Richard Aedy from ABC Radio National's Life Matters.

Just over a quarter of all trips in The Netherlands are by bike, the majority of those short rides to the shops.

"What they have created is through good town planning, good road rules, and it really starts off when the basis is prioritising bicycle use for those short trips," she said.
