Building on the success of its Thinkers in Residence scheme, Deakin Research has announced a new Industry Experts in Residence program.

The purpose of this program is to bring industry or technology experts to Deakin University, to advance understanding and engagement of Deakin academics in industry-focused research problems and ideas.

The program also aims to increase industry’s understanding of opportunities for industry benefits through collaboration with university researchers.

The residency will normally be for a one to 6 month period. It is envisioned that Industry Experts in Residence will typically be experts in commercially-relevant areas of Engineering, Information Technology, Materials Sciences, Chemical Sciences or Biotechnology.

Industry Experts are expected to bring a broad based understanding of their industry sector, in the context of future thinking.

Through this program they will both advance research collaborations and make an important contribution to Deakin’s research culture.

Led by Vice-Chancellor Professor Jane Hollander, Deakin has committed itself to working with industry to help create the new industries, products and jobs in Australia.

Two recent initiatives, the new Australian Carbon Fibre Research Facility (ACFRF) along with the proposed Centre for Advanced Design in Engineering training (CADET) are just one part of this.

The University is keen to build on its achievements in creating new products through the Proof of Concept facility at Waurn Ponds where ideas can be taken from concept to commercialisation and this can only increase when the ACFRF is opened next year.

Examples of breakthrough products already in the marketplace are CFusion’s tyre rims made from entirely carbon fibre and the partnership with VR TEK Global Pty Ltd that does away with environmentally unacceptable mountains of used tyres by recycling them instead.

Applications for Industry Expert in Residence positions at Deakin are now open.
