In late 2009, I started my Industry Based Learning placement at Skilled Group. Skilled is a labouring company which hires people and contracts them out to other organisations to give them a few employee related advantages. I worked under the IT Applications division, which manages the software and data used by the business.
During my placement at Skilled, I was able to apply the skills I learnt at Deakin and use them in a working environment. Majority of the work I undertook at Skilled involved web development where I was given the task of upgrading Skilled's current Intranet site to the Microsoft SharePoint platform. Another fantastic opportunity was working on one Skilled's partners websites, where we developed an online booking system and integrated it with their current website.
Working at Skilled was a fantastic opportunity, because it allowed me to work in a positive atmosphere with professionals who are passionate about their jobs and the organisation they work for. It allowed me to further enhance my knowledge about unfamiliar technology and gain an insight as to how it works in an environment where people rely on it.
Overall my industry placement was a fantastic experience, as it allowed me to enhance my knowledge and work with new technologies. It also allowed me to apply the skills I learned during university and apply them in a working manner, and most importantly I was able to see the results of my actions across the business. Working with Microsoft SharePoint was a fantastic experience, as the application is very expensive to run, and it would have been difficult to receive firsthand experience otherwise. This opened a new door of opportunity for me, and is a technology I hope to continue working with in the future.
