Cutting edge IT research and training
Information technology is an essential tool for innovation and productivity across a wide range of sectors. We conduct research in data science, artificial intelligence, digital technologies and cyber security. Learn about our research centres or find a supervisor for your PhD.
Our masters and PhD students are attracted to Deakin's School of IT for our world-renowned supervisors, partners, facilities, and extensive research possibilities.
Enjoy flexible start dates and multiple locations. Our Master of Science (Information Technology) is a 2-year full-time degree and a pathway to a PhD. Involves a written thesis.
Work in a collaborative community; study our Doctor of Philosophy (Information Technology) over 3 years full time on a supervised research project. Involves a written thesis and oral defence.
Our Cotutelle PhD initiative allows candidates to co-enrol at two universities in different countries. Conduct research under a jointly supervised doctoral program with dual awards while being immersed in diverse research.
Get all the information you need to successfully apply for a Deakin research degree or PhD, including key dates, entry requirements, supporting documents and finding a research supervisor. We’re here to support you.

We have three themes that drive the direction of our research:
Smart data-driven world – aims to enable and understand the world driven by the pervasive generation and use of big data.
Creating future digital technologies – aims to create and develop future digital technologies that will deliver benefits across the economy and society.
Cyber security – aims to advance technologies and practices to protect enterprises, government and society against unauthorised access to data centres and other computerised systems.
Deakin Cyber focuses on the technology, business, human, legal and policy aspects of cyber security. We develop cyber security technologies, provide thought leadership to inform legal and strategic policy directions, and work closely with industry, business and government to proactively respond to emerging cyber security threats
In addition to Deakin Cyber, we have three research centres covering multiple disciplines, led by teams working to tackle some of today’s greatest IT challenges.
Centre for Software, Systems and Society (CS3) – CS3 conducts fundamental and applied research for the specification, creation, evaluation and efficient operation of innovative, software-supported systems.
Data to Intelligence Research Centre (D2I) – D2I conducts research involving processes starting with data and ending with intelligence. We solve problems for data, data modelling, complex networks and decision making, based on advanced data science, mathematics and machine learning.
Centre for Internet of Things ECOsystems Research and Experimentation (CITECORE) – CITECORE carries out collaborative Internet of Things focused research in partnership with government, industry and the community to create demonstrable innovations and intellectual property.
