Choosing the right supervisor for you
At Deakin, you’ll be supported by a team of at least two supervisors to guide you through your degree.
Your supervisor can make a big difference to your research journey, so it’s important to choose the right fit. Take time to explore their expertise and how they approach supervision. Also, make sure you understand how they like to work and their team environment. Together, these insights can give you a glimpse of the guidance and support you can look forward to as a graduate researcher at Deakin.
How to find a research supervisor
Consider your research topic
Once you’ve checked that you’re eligible to apply for a graduate research degree, think about the problem, theory or idea you want to explore. Start by reviewing Deakin's research strengths and browsing our institutes, centres and groups. This will help you shape a topic that aligns with the work happening across the university.Look for a potential supervisor

Once you've identified an available expert in your area, email them directly to share your research interests and start a conversation about supervision opportunities.
*If you're applying to the Faculty of Business and Law, you will be assigned a relevant supervisor when you submit your application.

Your supervisors will guide you through every stage of your research, offering feedback and helping shape your ideas. As you progress, you’ll take on more responsibility, becoming an expert in your field while building a strong, collaborative relationship with your supervisory team.
