Government and Deakin-funded research scholarships

Domestic and international research degree and PhD applicants may qualify for the Australian Government’s Research Training Program Scholarship (RTP) or Deakin’s Postgraduate Research Scholarship (DUPR). These scholarships can support you for up to four years of study and may include:

  • full tuition fee coverage
  • overseas student health cover (for international applicants)
  • relocation allowances (where relevant)
  • a stipend to support living costs, currently $37,450 per annum (2026 rate, tax-exempt).

Deakin also offers a range of other research degree and PhD scholarships to support your studies, available to both domestic and international applicants. For the best chance at securing a scholarship, you’ll need an H1 grade average or equivalent.

Tuition fees for research degrees and PhDs

Tuition fees will vary depending on your course, whether you are a domestic or international applicant and the scholarships you may receive.

Domestic applicants

  • If you’re an Australian citizen, New Zealand citizen or Australian permanent visa holder you do not need to pay tuition fees.
  • All domestic graduate research candidates are automatically covered by the Research Training Program (RTP) by a RTP Fee Offset scholarship.

International applicants

  • If you're an international applicant, you can check individual course pages for specific fee information
