Compliance reporting FAQs

Understanding the compliance reporting cycle and its implications is important for all international students. The following information will help you understand the process.

When will Deakin report my CoE for completion of studies?

Deakin receives daily reports that indicate when a student is no longer studying.

If you have completed your course more than 2 months before the end date on your CoE, your CoE will be cancelled the day after your enrolment status changes to "completed".

DIBP provided the following advice in August 2015: Where a student finishes the principal course earlier than scheduled, the student can remain on the student visa, even if they are not intending to undertake further studies.  If the provider reports that the study has ceased, the department will consider whether the student has met their study obligations and if so, generally would not consider cancellation.

You may wish to discuss your situation with DIBP to ensure you remain lawfully in Australia.

When will Deakin report my CoE for discontinuation of studies?

Deakin receives daily reports that indicate when a student is no longer studying.

If you discontinue your studies at Deakin, your CoE will be cancelled the day after your enrolment status changed to 'discontinued'.

In such cases, you will be expected to either re-enrol at Deakin and apply for a new CoE, apply for another course and a new CoE at a new provider or leave Australia within 28 days.

When will Deakin report my CoE for an inactive enrolment status?

Deakin receives daily reports that indicate when a student is no longer studying.

If you have failed to re-enrol in your course by the time the trimester starts, your CoE will be reported the day after your enrolment status changes to 'inactive' or the day after the start of trimester 1 or trimester 2.

In such cases, you will be expected to either enrol and apply for a new CoE, apply for another course and a new CoE at a new provider or leave Australia within 28 days.

Please note: The University does not report on inactive status in Trimester 3 or during the inter-trimester breaks. We only report an inactive status where your enrolment becomes inactive during a compulsory study period (i.e. T1 or T2).

When will Deakin report my CoE if I take intermission?

If your intermission has been approved, your CoE for the current study period will be cancelled by the International Student Adviser at the time of your intermission interview and a new CoE will be created at the same time for the study period you intend to return to study.

If your intermission has been granted, it is expected that you will depart Australia. If you are unable to depart Australia during the period of your intermission, you should contact DIBP to inform them of the reasons why you are unable to depart Australia.

When will Deakin report my CoE if my enrolment is terminated for misconduct or unsatisfactory academic progress?

Deakin receives daily reports that indicate when a student is no longer studying.

If your enrolment is terminated for the above reasons, your CoE will be reported on the day after your enrolment status changes to 'discontinued'.

In such cases, you will be expected to either enrol at another provider and apply for a new CoE or leave Australia within 28 days.

Although you are no longer required to report to DIBP within 28 days of having your CoE cancelled for unsatisfactory academic progress, DIBP may cancel your visa if you do not re-enrol into a new course within 28 days. It is also important to note that you only have work rights while you are enrolled in a course. If you fail to re-enrol in a course, you will not have valid work rights.

When will Deakin report my CoE if I don't commence studies at Deakin?

If you are due to start a course at Deakin and you fail to start on the agreed start date, Deakin will cancel your CoE the day after the commencement of the trimester in which you were supposed to commence unless you have made arrangements with Deakin and applied for an extension of time to enrol.

If your CoE is cancelled for non-commencement of study, apply for a new CoE at another provider or depart Australia within 28 days.

When will Deakin report my CoE if I don't pay my fees by the due date?

Deakin receives daily reports that indicate when a student is no longer studying.

If your enrolment is terminated for non-payment of fees, your CoE will be cancelled on the Monday AFTER your enrolment status changes to 'discontinued'. This means that you have until the following Monday to pay your full outstanding fees plus the reinstatement fee before your CoE is cancelled. If you have still not paid your full outstanding fees plus the reinstatement fee by the following Monday. your CoE will be cancelled.

In such cases, you will be expected to either pay your full outstanding fees within 10 working days and be reinstated into your course and get a new CoE, apply for a course at another provider and get a new CoE or depart Australia within 28 days.
