Ms Jenny Grenfell lectures in visual arts education in the School of Education. She is Chairperson of the Arts Education Teaching, Learning and Research Group, and Coordinator of Education programs at the Warrnambool Campus. Jenny was appointed as a Teaching Scholar in 2008.

Jenny's teaching and research focuses on ideas about how individual students learn, how to engage all students in meaningful collaborative experiences and how changes in teaching and learning may occur, using web-based learning artefacts linked to immersive environments.

Recently, Jenny has focused on building and teaching in an immersive three dimensional virtual arts education centre on Deakin Island in Second Life. Incorporating University and external web environments, the centre was developed with colleagues from the Arts Education Teaching and Learning Group and received Strategic Teaching and Learning Grant Scheme (STALGS) funding in 2007. Jenny presented on the project at Deakin University teaching and learning conferences in 2007 and 2008. An overview of the project, which Jenny gave at the CreateWorld conference held at Griffith University in 2007, generated interest from a number of universities wanting to develop a presence in Second Life and led to the formation of a collaborative group to explore the use of Second Life to support teaching and learning in undergraduate and postgraduate programs. Jenny collaborates with arts education students in the arts education centre. In this environment learning is an active process of acquiring, assessing and producing knowledge through the exploration of new forms of teaching and learning, and ongoing experimentation with emerging technologies.

Jenny is also taking a leadership role in the following teaching and learning related activities:

  • course development - using e-learning technologies, Jenny developed the Visual Arts Education component of the Arts in Education unit for the Malaysian Primary Teacher Education program in 2007, participated in the induction process for Malaysian lecturers and conducted quality assurance
  • mentoring academic staff.
