Vice-Chancellor

As Deakin’s principal executive officer, Professor Iain Martin leads the University and determines its strategic and academic vision. The Vice-Chancellor also plays a major role in cultivating and sustaining Deakin University’s relationship with its many key external stakeholders.

Introducing Iain Martin

Professor Iain Martin has been Vice-Chancellor of Deakin University since July 2019.

'As one of Australia's largest universities, Deakin has strong global linkages, world-class research and, most importantly, an educational portfolio that blends the best of campus and digital delivery into a highly supportive and personalised student experience.

'We will continue to push the boundaries; through new approaches to delivering an outstanding education for our students, innovative digital leadership, expanding our community and industry connections, and through research excellence and global reach.

Deakin VC Iain Martin

Prior to taking up his appointment as Vice-Chancellor of Deakin University, Professor Martin was Vice-Chancellor of Anglia Ruskin University.

Professor Martin was born in South Wales and spent his childhood in Hampshire. He studied medicine at the University of Leeds and trained and worked as a surgeon in Leeds before moving to New Zealand in 2000.

We have a long-held commitment to lifelong learning and to being flexible and accessible – providing students with real choices about how, when and where learning occurs.
