Vice-Chancellor
Vice-Chancellor Professor Iain Martin leads Deakin’s strategic and academic vision, driving balanced excellence in our mission to be Australia’s most progressive university.
Meet Professor Iain Martin
Professor Martin commenced as Vice-Chancellor and President of Deakin University in July 2019. Previously, he led Anglia Ruskin University in the UK and held senior roles at the University of Auckland, including Head of Surgery and Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Strategic Engagement. A trained surgeon, he transitioned from medicine to university leadership motivated by his belief in the power of higher education to transform lives and communities.
This philosophy underpins Professor Martin’s pursuit of balanced excellence at Deakin. We are Australia's largest university excelling in both education and research, performing highly in both areas globally – a feat few can deliver at scale.
A commitment to balanced excellence frames our ambition to be Australia’s most progressive university, one that embraces innovation and prepares students for a changing world. We push boundaries through flexible education delivery, digital leadership, strong industry and community partnerships, and research with impact.

The social licence challenge confronting Australian universities
Professor Martin is spearheading a national conversation on the future of Australian universities, their community responsibilities and efforts to rebuild public trust. Research by Deakin University has shown that one third of Australians do not trust universities. Professor Martin's white paper explores the social licence challenge facing higher education and puts forward recommendations for a unified sector response.
