Content

Bioinformatics is defined as the application of tools of computation and analysis to the capture and interpretation of biological data. It requires a good knowledge of the basics of molecular biology, statistics and data science skills. Bioinformatics is used for drug design and discovery, to determine the mechanisms of disease, to understand the workings of genetics in populations, in modelling the spread of infectious diseases, in forensics, and in conservation. In this unit, students will gain a working knowledge of bioinformatics, and how it is applied in various settings. Students will become proficient with working the Linux shell, writing shell scripts and entire workflows. Students will be familiar with and apply best practices for research software development. Students will use their knowledge of R/Rstudio to analyse real research datasets, visualise data, derive inferences, and write detailed reports to communicate their findings.
