Deakin is the official university of the Geelong Cats. This long-standing partnership was recently enhanced when Deakin became a co-major partner of the Cats AFLW team in its inaugural season in 2019.
Deakin’s School of Exercise and Nutrition Sciences is the official high performance partner of the Cats, which facilitates wide-ranging research collaborations and regular placements opportunities for students in areas such as strength and conditioning, nutrition and performance technology.
Our placement students benefit from access to experts and facilities at GMHBA Stadium, including the gymnasium, theatre and high-performance facilities for course practicals, video capture, seminars and meetings.
Our two organisations are strongly connected to Geelong, home of Deakin’s founding campus at Waurn Ponds and Geelong Cats heartland. The depth of our relationship is illustrated by Deakin’s Dominique Condo, a lecturer in sports nutrition, who is also the Performance Dietitian at the Geelong Cats.
Deakin Melbourne Boomers
Deakin is the proud naming rights sponsor of one of the Women’s National Basketball League's most powerful clubs, and Australia's longest continually running elite women's sporting franchise, the Melbourne Boomers.
This long-standing relationship creates a range of opportunities for our students to engage with the club as fans and, most importantly, as students through a strategic work-integrated learning program.
Deakin's extensive support for the club provides the Deakin Melbourne Boomers with access to our world leading School of Exercise and Nutrition Science team, whilst the coaching panel, including head coach and Tall Ferns coach Guy Molloy, also regularly present to students.
The 2018-19 season saw 19 Deakin University students producing the broadcast for Deakin Melbourne Boomers home games. The production was the first of its kind, led by senior lecturer Simon Wilmot, who worked alongside executive producer Peter Johnson.
The partnership also provides membership discounts for students, alumni and staff, as well as money-can't-buy experiences during the season.
2019 Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race
Over the 2019 Australia Day weekend, the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race once again returned to Geelong, home of two Deakin University campuses, and the spectacular Surf Coast.
Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race
This partnership supports the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race, which was introduced in 2015 and is the first event of its kind in Australia.
Inspired by the prestigious 'Spring Classics' of Europe, the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race is an international event on the WorldTour cycling calendar. Held in Geelong and the Surf Coast (also home to two of Deakin’s campuses), it provides a weekend of the world’s best cycling, delivering high excitement and intense competition.
Deakin is the official education partner of the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race and the naming rights partner of the Deakin University Elite Women’s Road Race.
The university’s continued support for this amazing event highlights our advocacy for women in sport, while providing staff, students and the broader community with opportunities to participate, volunteer and win.
Sport is a universal language that engages people and brings them together in a way few other activities can. The Deakin University Elite Women’s Road Race strongly aligns with our aims of inspiring women to achieve at the highest possible level in whatever they choose to do.

Eastern Football League
Deakin University has recently partnered with the Eastern Football League (EFL). The partnership allows Deakin to work with the EFL to improve female participation and engagement in sport and physical activity across the lifespan, and will provide Deakin students with opportunities to have practical placements at the EFL and in EFL clubs in a range of areas including exercise science, sport management, media and graphic design. It will also allow Deakin to further its support of community-wide participation in sport and physical activity among those living in the eastern region of metropolitan Melbourne.
Barwon Sports Academy
Barwon Sports Academy (BSA) is part of the Victorian Regional Academies Sport Group. Deakin is the official apparel sponsor for BSA, and has a reciprocal training and program development collaboration with the academy.
We proudly support the education programs for program managers to access nutritional advice, sports psychology and injury prevention – as well as other educational benefits for athletes in their program.
In 2009, Belmont High School was granted $4 million as part of the Victorian Government's Energising Science and Mathematics Strategy (2009), to establish 'BioLAB: The Victorian Bioscience Education Centre'. This state-of-the-art facility is available for use by primary and secondary school students and teachers from all over Victoria.
BioLAB has been established to promote excellence and innovation in science and mathematics education. BioLAB has joined forces with Deakin to create and deliver a program called 'The Winning Edge', to be offered to secondary school students at the Deakin Waurn Ponds Campus.
