Strengthening family-school relationships in South Sudanese-Australian communities
John Deng Jok is a PhD candidate at Deakin undertaking research that examines how migrant families navigate Australia’s education system and what schools can do to create stronger, more equitable partnerships.
Through his research, John Deng Jok is helping to amplify the voices of South Sudanese-Australian families and open new pathways for inclusive, culturally responsive education in Australia.
Giving voice to underrepresented perspectives
John’s PhD examines how South Sudanese-Australian families and schools interact. He explores the cultural, structural and relational factors that shape those relationships and their impact on educational outcomes.
'My PhD explores how South Sudanese-Australian families engage with the Australian education system, focusing on the nature and quality of family-school partnerships. The research aims to give voice to South Sudanese families’ experiences and perspectives, which are often underrepresented in education research and policy discussions,' explains John.
Building relationships through research
The chance to engage directly with families and schools has been one of the most rewarding elements of John’s research. He notes that 'engaging directly with South Sudanese families as well as school staff to hear their stories' has provided invaluable insights.
Interviews allowed him to 'connect deeply with participants and understand the rich cultural dynamics that shape their engagement with schools'. For John, this has been both a personal and academic privilege and a vital way to directly represent diverse voices.
John hopes that his findings will help education leaders create more inclusive and culturally responsive systems. By amplifying the voices of South Sudanese-Australian families, he aims to 'contribute to more equitable partnerships between schools and families, and ultimately, better educational outcomes for students.'
Why a PhD?
John’s decision to undertake a PhD is tied closely to his own story. Education, he says, has always represented 'a tool for social change' and research is a powerful avenue to address systemic barriers.
The importance of finding the right supervisors
When deciding where to undertake his PhD, Deakin stood out as the right choice. John was drawn to the university’s strong reputation for education and social research, as well as its emphasis on community-engaged research.
John’s supervisory team has been fundamental in shaping his research journey. He connected with Associate Professor Anna Kilderry and Dr Shaun Rawolle through Deakin's School of Education because their research interests closely aligned his own.
'I am so fortunate to have them as my supervisors and they have been incredibly supportive throughout my PhD journey, providing guidance, encouraging critical thinking, and supporting both the academic and emotional aspects of doctoral study. Their mentorship has been invaluable.'
Deakin’s focus on equity and inclusion aligned with my research interests and values. I also appreciated the supportive research environment and access to experienced supervisors in the field of Sociology of Education.

What’s next?
With submission on the horizon, John is already focused on translating his findings into impact. His plan is to publish key findings from his research and engage with education stakeholders to translate his work into practice. Career-wise, he is keeping his options open, considering academia, consultancy, or working directly with education departments and community organisations 'to influence policy and practice'.
Advice for future researchers
For John passion is the essential motivator in considering a PhD: 'Choose a topic you are genuinely passionate about, and don’t be afraid to reach out for support when you need it. Work closely with your supervisors and build a strong support network, including peers and the community. Be open to learning and growing throughout your journey.'
