Domestic student

You are an Australian domestic student if you are:

  • an Australian citizen;
  • an Australian permanent resident;
  • an Australian permanent humanitarian visa holder;
  • a New Zealand citizen.

International student

You are an international student if you are:

  • a temporary resident (visa status) of Australia;
  • a permanent resident (visa status) of New Zealand;
  • a resident or citizen of any other country, intending to study on a student visa.

VTAC application dates

Timely applications for 2027 are now open and will close at 5pm on 28 September 2026.

Equity schemes and scholarships applications are now open and will close at 5pm on 9 October 2026.

Direct application dates

Applications for Trimester 3 are open.

Apply for your ideal course through the Deakin Application Portal. Course application dates can vary. Please check individual course pages for relevant updates, including important dates and study period information.

International student application dates

Deakin University offers three trimesters each year, giving you flexibility as to when you start your studies. Application closing dates vary by intake and country to allow time for visa processing and enrolment. Ensure you check the relevant deadlines for your country when applying to start studying in March (Trimester 1), July (Trimester 2) or November (Trimester 3).

The intake dates for Deakin research students in 2026 are:

  • Intake 1: Wednesday 25 February 2026
  • Intake 2: Friday 1 May 2026
  • Intake 3: Wednesday 1 July 2026
  • Intake 4: Tuesday 27 October 2026.

If you're unsure which faculty or institute your research degree falls under, check your supervisor’s profile for details on the relevant faculty or institute.

  • International students pursuing a research degree or PhD with the Faculty of Arts and Education may not commence in Intake 1.
  • Students applying for a research degree or PhD with the Faculty of Business and Law may not commence in Intake 2.
