Content

Demonstrating the effectiveness and impact of projects, programs and policies is of central importance to development and humanitarian organisations and informs evidence-based approaches to decision making. This unit first examines the broader political economy context that influences the practice of Monitoring & Evaluation (M&E) in international development. The unit will support students develop a critical understanding of the history of M&E and popular concepts, approaches, and tools to monitor, evaluate and undertake field research in development and humanitarian contexts. The unit covers project and program-level M&E approaches and tools, including the development of M&E frameworks to guide practice. Theoretical and practice aspects of the debate on development results and impact are also explored.
