Content
This unit consolidates and extends students' understanding of core concepts in the study of politics, namely power, justice and democracy, by critically engaging with key canonical texts and contemporary debates in the discipline. The unit begins by exploring how the most significant modern political theorists have characterised political power, including in terms of class, race, gender, ecological issues and governmentality. It then introduces and critically appraises the key contemporary theories of justice that seek to mitigate abuses of power. The unit concludes by exploring radical critiques of liberal democracy and democratic alternatives, including agonistic and deliberative democracy. Upon completing the unit students will be familiar with the key critiques of liberal democracy and how these are informed by contemporary theories of power and justice. They will also be able to use these theories to understand and analyse a range of contemporary political issues.

Hurdle requirements
To be eligible to obtain a pass in this unit, students must achieve an overall mark of at least 50% in assessment task 2: Interactive oral examination to evidence a minimum proficiency in the aligned discipline learning outcomes included in this unit.
