Content
This unit examines the theory and practice of war and strategic studies. What is the role of war in international politics? How do states authorise and deploy legitimate force? What factors determine the intensity, duration, and consequences of military action? We begin by examining the lexicon of war as it relates to the foundational theorists and theories of war in Europe and Asia. We then turn to the original domains of conflict (sea, land, and air) to trace the changing meanings of military power and violence as it manifests across the theorisation and practice of civil, irregular, and nuclear war. We conclude by looking at contemporary war, turning to drones and artificial intelligence to consider the prospects for so-called 'bloodless' war. Finally, we will consider the implications of emerging technologies for future warfare.
