Content

How can international studies help us navigate the challenges of a world increasingly defined by volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity (VUCA)? In this unit, students will explore this question via participation in a multi-week team-based digital simulation in order to better understand the personal and professional implications of a VUCA world. The unit comprises three parts: in the first, we examine VUCA as a concept, drawing on scholarship from a range of disciplines including International Relations, Politics and Policy Studies, Anthropology, Humanitarian and Development Studies, Communication Studies and Leadership Studies. In the second, students will work in teams to achieve a range of collaborative and competitive goals within a simulation, supported by weekly briefings (lectures) and consultations (seminars) as well as online resources. Finally, we will undergo a debrief process, reflecting on the simulation developments and outcomes, as well as returning to the idea of VUCA and the relevance of international studies in responding to the challenges it presents.

IMPORTANT: From week 4 onwards, you will be participating in a team-based digital simulation that is integral to the assessment tasks for the unit. Separate simulations are run for each campus (Online, Waterfront, Burwood) and you should ensure that your enrolment reflects your intended mode of engagement with scheduled learning activities. Attendance at all scheduled learning activities is expected for students enrolled on-campus. For those enrolled online, regular weekly engagement with the scheduled learning activities or recorded lectures, as well as with your team, is required. You should expect to spend 6-7 hours per week on the simulation, including scheduled learning activities.
