Content
This unit develops students’ critical thinking and problem-solving skills required for effective participation in tertiary study and the workplace. Students are introduced to key concepts underpinning critical inquiry, including reasoning, evidence, argument and perspective.
The unit focuses on the analysis and evaluation of academic arguments, supporting students to identify claims, assumptions, evidence and conclusions to assess the strengths and limitations of different viewpoints. Students learn to read and respond to academic and real-world texts critically, distinguishing between opinion and evidence and recognising bias, credibility and relevance.
Students also develop problem-solving skills by learning to analyse issues, define problems and propose informed and reasoned approaches to finding solutions. Through scaffolded activities, students practise applying critical thinking strategies to academic and practical scenarios, supporting the development of judgement, confidence and readiness for further undergraduate study.
